Henry Talmage Elrod was a pilot at Wake Island during World War II. He shot down the Japanese pilot who delivered the sinking blow to the U.S.S. Arizona at Pearl Harbor. After his plane was destroyed, Elrod fought with the U.S. Marine Corps to defend the island and he led a charge into the attackers, killing several with his Thompson, before being killed.
