A4 road: Meaning (information, definition, explanation, facts)

The A4 is a major road in England, also known as the Great West Road. It runs from London to Avonmouth, near Bristol.

Starting in central London, it runs west via Slough, Maidenhead, Reading, Newbury, Hungerford, Marlborough, Calne, Chippenham, Bath and Bristol.

Formerly a trunk road forming the main route to Bristol and the westcountry, the road has been replaced by the M4 motorway for long distance and freight journeys.
