Athletic Chair refers to an executive member of a fraternity or sorority who organizes the sporting events of the house. Traditionally, this executive coordinates the intramural sports teams of his or her society. This involves dealing with the college intramural system by signing the society up for the sport, going to captain's meetings on the rules and regulations, and submitting a forfeit check that is cashed upon forfeiting a game where the officials still need to be paid. Athletic Chairs also set up year-end activities to celebrate the season. They convey to the rest of the members who was Most Valuable Player for each game throughout the season. Aside from the Athletic Chair's sole operations, he or she may be involved with other executives of the society.
The group may be involved in higher level sporting events such as a club, junior varsity, or varsity level. The activities of the members participating in these sports may fall under the jurisdiction of the Athletic Chair, yet he or she will probably not have as much influence. Many fraternities and sororities have a social stereotype of being related to a certain sport, such as the "Football Frat." The Athletic Chair may relay summaries of games with highlights to the rest of the members. An Athletic Chair may also work with the Social Chair in setting up parties related to the recent athletic events. Many obligations lay with the Athletic Chair of a fraternity and sorority, both individually and cooperatively.
