Encyclopedia: Burgh

A Burgh (pronounced: /ˡbʌʀə/) is an autonomous corporate entity, usually a town. The term has been in use in Scotland since the 12th century, when David I created the first Royal burghs. Recognition of burgh status today, however, has little more than ceremonial value.
