Carmarthen: Meaning (information, definition, explanation, facts)

Carmarthen (Welsh : Caerfyrddin) is the county town of Carmarthenshire, Wales. It is on the River Tywi and has a population of about 20,000. It is the site of Trinity College Camarthen. When the British Islands were a Roman province, Carmarthen was the centre of the civitas of the Demetae Celtic tribe, known as Moridunum. According to Arthurian legend Carmarthen was where Merlin was born: "Caer" is Welsh for '"fortress" and "Myrddin" is Welsh for "Merlin." Many areas surrounding Carmarthen still allude to this, such as the nearby Brynn Myrddin (Merlin's Forest).
