Crust punk: Meaning (information, definition, explanation, facts)

Crust punk is another extreme evolution of hardcore punk. Some consider the genre hard to listen to, in that it could be considered very abrasive. In particular those not used to the sound might compare it to noise.

Crust punk tends to be extremely political. Many crust punk bands have extreme attitudes and beliefs to match the music, such as vegan and anarchist beliefs, but other common themes include atheism, pro-choice, gender equality, environmentalism and animal rights.

Many consider the genre to have started with the band Amebix, but elements of the crust punk sound existed previously, most notably in the early anarcho-punk bands such as Crass. If it can be said that crust started with the Amebix then their direct precursors were Disorder, Chaos UK, and the British fathers of black metal Venom. Crust punk is tied to the grindcore and noise/experimental scenes. Fans of crust punk are sometimes called "crusties."
