According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Crypt of Civilization is considered the first successful implementation of a time capsule. Sealed in 1940 at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia, the Crypt contains hundreds of items representative of the time. The Crypt is not scheduled to be opened until the year 8113.
The Crypt is a room 20 feet (6 meters) long, 10 feet (3 m) high and 10 feet (3 m) wide. It is sealed with a great stainless steel door, welded in place. Among the items in the Crypt are microfilms of over 800 books and reference materials, along with audio recordings and movies.
