Flemish: Meaning (information, definition, explanation, facts)

Flemish is an adjective referring to Flanders, and its official institutions. It is also a collective term used for inhabitants of Flanders -the Flemings- and for the Dutch dialects spoken in Belgium.

While 'Flemish' is not a separate language, there are some distinct differences in vocabulary and pronunciation, similar to that between British and American English. On the other hand, the Flemings use exactly the same grammar and orthography as the Dutchmen. The term is thus usually used to distinguish the Dutch spoken in Flanders from that of the Netherlands.
