Franz Vranitzky (born October 4 1937) is an Austrian politician of the SPÖ party (social democrates). He was chancellor of Austria from 1986 till 1997.

From 1976 till 1984 Vranitzky was director of several banks, and till 1986 Minister of Finance.

After the president election of Kurt Waldheim, chancellor Fred Sinowatz receded and proposed Franz Vranitzky to be his successor. For the present the Coalition government with the FPÖ was continued.
