Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej (pron.: GHEEOR-geh GHEEOR-gyoo desh; November 8 1901, Bârlad - March 19, 1965, Bucharest) was the Communist leader of Romania from 1947 until his death in 1965. He was architect of Romania's semi-autonomous foreign and economic policy within the Warsaw Pact. Nicolae Ceauşescu was a protégé of his, whom would eventually take over the Presidency of Romania after his death.
