Grantha script was the widely used script to write Sanskrit in South India, especially in Tamil Nadu. However, with the recent popularisation of the Devanagari script, the Grantha script is not widely used. Its fall in popularity can also be attributed to a general fall in popularity of the Sanskrit language itself in Tamil Nadu, which a few decades back saw a thriving movement that was opposed to the Sanskrit language and tried to remove all traces of Sanskrit from the Tamil language. Nowadays, this script is confined to a few Brahmans who use it to read old books printed in this script.
