Hawaiian Airlines is the 12th largest commercial airline in the United States and uses the IATA designation HA. Based in the State of Hawai'i, Hawaiian services all the major Hawaiian Islands, American Samoa, Tahiti, Sydney, Australia, and most major cities on the U.S. West Coast, including specifically Seattle, Washington, Portland, Oregon, Las Vegas, Nevada, Phoenix, Arizona, and Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego in California.
Several of the West Coast destinations are linked through Kahului, Maui. It is the largest airline based in Hawai‘i and is commonly referred to by the acronym "HAL".
The Hawaiian Airlines hub is the Honolulu International Airport in Honolulu, Hawai'i; it is one of two airlines that hubs there. HAL has alliances with Alaska Airlines, America West Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Northwest Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic Airways.
Hawaiian Airlines filed for bankruptcy in March 2003, and is overdue for $4.5 million USD worth of payments to the pilots' pension plan. Suggestions have been made within the company that include termination of this plan.
