Herb Washington was a world-class sprinter tapped by Oakland A's owner Charles Finley in 1974 to become baseball's first (and only) "designated runner." In 1974, he managed 29 stolen bases for the A's, despite having virtually no previous baseball experience, and was part of the A's World Series championship of that year. In 1975, Finley decided the experiment had "run" its course and Washington's brief baseball career was over.
