India conducted two nuclear tests, in 1974 and 1998. The first explosion was called Operation Smiling Buddha and was said to be a "peaceful nuclear test" and second one was called Operation Shakti in which 5 nuclear test were conducted including one hydrogen bomb test. Some sources assert that India has at least 50 nuclear bombs. India has both bombers and short to medium range missiles for nuclear weapon deployment.
India acceded to the Geneva Protocol in 1930, the Biological Weapons Convention on July 15, 1974 and the Chemical Weapons Convention on September 3, 1996. It is not yet a signatory to either the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty or the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), but did acceed to the Partial Test Ban Treaty in October 1963.
