Lawrence D. Bell (aka Larry Bell) was born in 1894 in Indiana. He left high school at age 16 and went to work for the Glenn L. Martin Company. Eventually, Bell became a vice president at Consolidated in Buffalo, New York. When Consolidated moved to San Diego, California in 1935, Bell founded Bell Aircraft Corporation, which went on to produce a number of innovative aircraft.
