Luis Wilfredo Rivas [REE-vas] (born August 30, 1979) is a Major League Baseball second baseman and right-handed batter who plays for the Minnesota Twins. Rivas was born in La Guaira, Vargas State, Venezuela. Signed by the Twins as a non-draft amateur free agent in 1995, he made his debut in the 2000 season.
Rivas is a free swinger batter who will swing at almost any pitch and usually put it in play. As a runner, he has good speed and is aggressive on the base paths. He does a good job of taking extrabases on outfield hits and to go from first to third on balls hit to right field.
Defensively, Rivas has soft hands, a great arm and good range. He turns the double play well and isn't afraid to get a little banged-up in the process. He is competent going back on pop-ups.
In four seasons Rivas has batted .266, with 19 home runs, 131 RBI, 193 runs, 64 doubles, 20 triples, and 59 stolen bases in 397 games.
