Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,781 km² (2,618 mi²). 6,729 km² (2,598 mi²) of it is land and 53 km² (20 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.78% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 95,802 people, 38,439 households, and 23,140 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (37/mi²). There are 41,319 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.02% White, 0.27% Black or African American, 2.29% Native American, 1.02% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. 1.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 38,439 households out of which 29.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.40% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.80% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.90% under the age of 18, 15.40% from 18 to 24, 29.20% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 10.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 99.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,454, and the median income for a family is $44,865. Males have a median income of $31,605 versus $21,720 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,808. 14.80% of the population and 8.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 14.60% are under the age of 18 and 8.20% are 65 or older.
