As a food its leaves are highly nutritious, a source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, protein, calcium and potassium.
The seeds may be crushed and used to purify water. The bark, sap, roots, leaves, seeds, oil and flowers are used in traditional medicine in several countries.
In Jamaica, it is used for a blue dye.
In Africa and India, its seed pods are cooked or pickled and eaten, and its oil used for cooking.
