National Velvet is the story of a girl, Velvet Brown, who attempts to ride her horse to victory in the Grand National steeplechase.

In 1944, the novel was made into a highly successful film starring Elizabeth Taylor.

National Velvet is the name of a 1980s rock band from Canada. Maria Del Mar was the lead vocalist. She has gone on to star in television and film. Some of the most popular songs by the band were "68 Hours" and "Sex Gorilla".
