Nitra county: Meaning (information, definition, explanation, facts)

The Nitra county is the name of a historic administrative county (comitatus) in western Slovakia.

A kind of predecessor of the Nitra county existed as early as in the 9th century at the time of Great Moravia

Around 1000, the Nitra county arose as one of the comitatus of the Kingdom of Hungary (in Latin: comitatus Nitriensis, in Hungarian Nyitr(i)a (vár)megye, in Slovak: Nitriansky komitát / Nitrianska stolica / Nitrianska župa, in German Neutraer Gespanschaft/Komitat Neutra). It was one of the first counties created in the Kingdom of Hungary. In its final phase, it was a strip of land between the Morava river in the north and the town of Nové Zámky in the south, plus an oulier around the town of Bojnice. The capital of the county was the Nitra Castle and since the late Middle Ages the town of Nitra.

When Slovakia became part of Czechoslovakia in 1919, the Nitra county (Nitrianska župa) continued to exist till 1927, but it had completely different powers etc. and somewhat modified borders

When Slovakia became independent temporarily between 1939 and 1945, the Nitra county (Nitrianska župa) was created again in 1940, but the southern part of its old territory became part of Hungary through the First Vienna Award.

The name "Bratislava county" is also used erroneously to designate the Nitra region (Nitriansky kraj) which was created in 1948.
