Ode to Billy Joe: Meaning (information, definition, explanation, facts)

Ode to Billie Joe was a hit song in 1967 for Bobbie Gentry, a singer from Chickasaw County, Mississippi. It recounts the night of June 3, 1953, when Billy Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge. The song is noteworthy for the mystery surrounding his reasons for jumping off the bridge, which Ms. Gentry has never revealed.

In 1976 it was made into a movie starring Robby Benson and directed by Max Baer, Jr., best known as Jethro on the 1960's TV show, The Beverly Hillbillies.
