Pichincha: Meaning (information, definition, explanation, facts)

Pichincha is an active volcano in the country of Ecuador and gives its name to the entire province.

Pichincha has borders with the provinces of Imbabura, Cotopaxi, Esmeraldas, Manabi, Los Rios, Napo and Sucumbios.

The capital city of the province and the country is Quito, and wraps around the base of the volcano. In October of 1999, the volcano had a major eruption that covered the city with several inches of ash. Prior to that, the volcano had had a number of minor eruptions but the last major eruption was in 1660 when about a foot of ash fell on the city. The mountain has two peaks, Guagua (15,695ft/4,784 m), which means "baby" or "young" in Quechua and Rucu (15413ft/4,698m), which means "old". The active caldera is behind Guagua. The second city of the province is Santo Domingo de los Colorados where the last remaining members of the Tsachila tribe live.

The province is divided into the following counties :

Cayambe, Mejia, Pedro Vicente Maldonado, Pedro Moncayo, Puerto Quito, Quito, Rumiñahui, Santo Domingo de los Colorados and San Miguel de los Bancos.
