The Santhal Parganas are a Division comprising five districts (Godda, Deoghar, Dumka, Sahibganj and Pakur) of northeastern Jharkhand state of India that formerly comprised a district in undivided Bihar and earlier in the Bengal Presidency (created in 1855). These districts are populated by the Santhals, a tribal people of India, who speak Santali (Santhali), and Austro-Asiatic language. They had famously rebelled against the British in 1857-58 under the leadership of Sido Murmu and his brother Kanhu Murmu.
