Serra (Brazil): Meaning (information, definition, explanation, facts)

Serra is both the name of a municipality and it's capital in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. Bordering the north of the state's capital, Vitória, the southern portion of this municipality is usually considered part of the Greater Vitória metropolitan area. The municipality as a whole has 330.000 people.

Serra, the capital of the municipality is to the north of the characteristic Mestre Álvaro mountain which juts out of the coastal lowlands, and which is said to look like a small mountain range or "Serra", in Portuguese, thus the town and municipality got it's name.

Politically

Serra has five districts (Distritos, in portuguese): Serra-Capital, Carapina, Calogi, Nova Almeida and Queimado. Between those districts there are 118 neighbourhoods (Bairros, in portuguese).

Another important unrban area is that of Jacaraipe, on the coast, 20km north of Vitória. Jacaraipe is very well known for surf champoinships and as a weekend beach used by capital dwellers. Equally other smaller fishing villages such as Manguinhos are also close enough for daytrips and is a popular destination for the locals.
