Sussex County is a county located in the U.S. State of New Jersey. As of 2000, the population is 144,166. Its county seat is Newton6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,388 km² (536 mi²). 1,350 km² (521 mi²) of it is land and 38 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.75% water. High Point in this county is the highest elevation in the state.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 144,166 people, 50,831 households, and 38,784 families residing in the county. The population density is 107/km² (277/mi²). There are 56,528 housing units at an average density of 42/km² (108/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.73% White, 1.04% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 3.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 50,831 households out of which 39.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.00% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.70% are non-families. 18.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.90% under the age of 18, 6.20% from 18 to 24, 31.50% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64, and 9.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $65,266, and the median income for a family is $73,335. Males have a median income of $50,395 versus $33,750 for females. The per capita income for the county is $26,992. 4.00% of the population and 2.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.10% are under the age of 18 and 5.40% are 65 or older.
