Travelcard: Meaning (information, definition, explanation, facts)

A travelcard is a ticket for public transport in London, which allows the holder to use the following modes of transport within the zones on the ticket:

Valid cards also entitle the holder to discounts on river services.

Travelcards are valid for one or more of the six zones. Zones are arranged concentrically, with Zone 1 including the central area, and Zone 6 including outlying towns such as Kingston, Uxbridge, Loughton and Upminster.

A Travelcard lasting seven days or more - with the exception of 7 day Travelcards covering only zone 1 or zones 1 and 2 - must usually be accompanied by a photocard bearing a photograph of the person who can use the card. These photocards are available from ticket offices on production of a passport-sized photograph, and are free if a Travelcard is bought at the same time. The travelcard itself can either be printed onto a card with a magnetic strip, or loaded onto an Oyster Card.
