Encyclopedia: Wood Buffalo, Alberta

The regional municipality of Wood Buffalo is located in the northeastern corner of Alberta. Created in 1995 as an amalgamation of the community of Fort McMurray and Improvement District 143^[1], it now ranks the largest in Canada. It is the largest municipality in the world that cannot be divided up further into sub-municipalities. Underlying its 68,454 km² of wilderness lie vast oil sand deposits, also known as the Athabasca Tar Sands, helping to make the region one of the fastest growing industrial areas in Canada.
