For other uses, see Yellowstone (disambiguation).

Native Americans have lived in the Yellowstone region for at least 11,000 years, and over 1,000 sites of historical significance have been discovered. The region was bypassed during the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the very early 1800s, and aside from visits by mountain men for the next 60 years, whose reports of boiling pools of water and other oddities were generally regarded as fantasy, organized exploration wasn't commenced until the late 1860s. After the creation of the park, lack of funding and little understanding of land management eventually led to the park being administered by the U.S. Army. With the creation of the National Park Service in 1917, administration of the park was transferred to the new agency. Hundreds of historical structures built since the late 1870s are protected and maintained for their architectural significance.
